Deforestation of the island has reached 90%,
sedimentation of water reservoirs as high as 13,000 metric
tons/km2/year, climate changes and rainfall has decreased in the las 100
years, genetically engineered experiments using herbicides (2,957
experiments in one year), industrial environmental violations of toxic
waste diposal (over 600 chemicals released), and tons of garbage in
beaches, water sources, and forest (USGS Water Resources of the
Caribbean and Caribbean Business Archive) require community awareness
and action. Students will be those future community leaders and
professionals that can make a difference in preserving the environmental
and the ecological resources for a quality life in Puerto Rico and the
planet earth. |
